Secure Data Enclave

To support KSU research that involves sensitive data that needs a secure computing environment, PIs can purchase access to a secure data enclave through UITS.  Currently, KSU is contracting with vendors to host the secure environments on cloud-based servers.

Before work on a new environment can be begin, the PI responsible for the security of the data will:

  1. Need an IRB number when the data involves human subjects.
  2. Need a budget, cost depends on need.
    Example: (As of 2022, $500 + $625/month)
    - Server with 4 CPU / 16 GB RAM / 100 GB SSD
    - Database server with 2 CPU / 8 GB RAM / 30 GB SSD
    - VPN access at +$15/month per extra user.
    - with vulnerability scans, backups and 24/7 support
  3. Contract review process for each instance.
  4. Complete user training in CITI.
  5. After system is created, some initiation and configuration likely required.

As one might guess, these steps may take time to complete.  Even though some can be done in parallel, it is recommended that you start early.  (Example: the project hasn't been awarded, but any data use agreement or data usage plan could be shared with UITS to help plan the resources needed)
