Data Analysis of Measles Outbreak in the Philippines

Project Description

Measles is a highly contagious disease caused by the measles virus. It is spread by coughing and sneezing and it's transmitted by direct contact or droplet exposure. Humans are the only natural host. Measles affects about 20 million people a year, primarily in the developing areas of Africa and Asia. While often regarded as a childhood illness, it can affect people of any age. The Philippines have declared a major measles outbreak in early 2019. In this study, we will build the epidemiology model to investigate this outbreak. A multi-scale modelling framework, parameterized by weather conditions, human case data, and vector, will be used to examine the seasonal effects and the measles vaccines rate on the effective reproduction number.

Researcher Requirements

  1. Strong statistics background, STAT 3120 - Statistical Methods I or STAT 3125 - Biostatistics must be completed
  2. GPA minimum: 3.0
  3. Programming experience at least in one of the following: R, Stata, Python 
  4. Self-motivated and good communication skills
