Extended Reality (XR) and Storytelling for STEAM Education

Immunology VR

Goals

Our research project seeks to leverage unique affordances of extended reality (XR) technologies, including virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR), to build an experiential and embodied learning framework that utilizes digital storytelling and art creation as core strategies to craft engaging narratives that weave through the complex STEM concepts (eg. molecular and structural biology) and make them more relatable and memorable to students.

Under this overarching goal, we will design and develop multiple project prototypes and use them as testbeds to investigate different design aspects of the experiential learning framework.

Experience Gained

Students will gain both technical and research skills by participating in following project activities:

  • Write engaging narratives to facilitate subject learning based on chosen STEM topics.
  • Create digital 2D/3D art inspired by STEM learning subjects.
  • Innovate the learning experience by integrating art creation into STEM learning.
  • Develop XR storytelling experiences in game engines to provide embodied learning experiences.
