Expedited Research Descriptions

To be eligible for expedited review the research must involve only minimal risk to the participants, be ineligible for exemption, and must be in one of the following categories (for a full description please see 45 CFR 46.110):

  1. Collection of hair, nails, or teeth in a non-disfiguring manner.
  2. Collection of excreta and external secretions (e.g., saliva, sweat, placenta at birth).
  3. Non-invasive data recorded from participants over 18 years of age during routine clinical practice (e.g., weighing, visual tests, EEG, EMG, EKG).
  4. Collection of blood samples from healthy, non-pregnant participants over 18 years of age who weigh at least 100 pounds. The amount should not exceed 550 milliliters in an eight-week period and collection may not occur more frequently than 2 times per week.
  5. Collection of dental plaque and calculus during routine prophylactic scaling.
  6. Voice recording for research purposes (video recording also falls under this category).
  7. Moderate exercise by healthy volunteer participants.
  8. The study of existing records or medical specimens.
  9. Research on individual or group behavior or characteristics that do not involve manipulation of behavior or stress to the participant.
  10. Research on drugs or devices that do not require an investigational new drug or investigational device exemption.

Research that gathers data of a highly sensitive nature or involves one of the vulnerable populations (minors, prisoners, intellectually disabled, pregnant women, etc.) would also fall under this type of review.

At KSU, CITI Online Training is mandatory for all faculty, staff, and students who are involved in human subject projects. All faculty members acting as faculty advisor on a student's project must also be certified as this involves supervision of student research.
