Kennesaw State will host its annual Ethics Awareness Week Nov. 9-13, 2020 with activities and events to bring awareness to ethics, reinforce a culture that recognizes the hard work of all employees, and promote the shared values of integrity, excellence, accountability and respect among the campus community.

As part of this celebration, the Office of Research and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion co-sponsored a virtual discussion of the film PICTURE A SCIENTIST, which explores issues of diversity and inclusion in research. The event took place on Thursday, November 12 from noon to 1 p.m. facilitated by Vice President for Research Phaedra Corso and Chief Diversity Officer Sylvia Carey-Butler.

About the Film

PICTURE A SCIENTIST (run time - 97 minutes) chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Featuring geologist Jane Willenbring, chemist Raychelle Burks, and biologist Nancy Hopkins, as well as key social scientists working to understand and reduce gender bias in the sciences, PICTURE A SCIENTIST brings diversity in science into sharp view at a critical time.

Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, the documentary highlights scientific luminaries - including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists - who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.

PICTURE A SCIENTIST was an official selection of the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival, postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film’s virtual theatrical run reached 47 theaters across the U.S. in June 2020, and raised money for two organizations advancing women of color in STEM.  The film has major funding from the Heising-Simons Foundation and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. It is also part of Sloan’s long-term Science on Screen partnership with the Coolidge Corner Theater and the first national virtual cinema theatrical release by a Science on Screen participant. The movie was directed by Ian Cheney and Sharon Shattuck and produced by Manette Pottle, Ian Cheney, and Sharon Shattuck.
