Air Quality Monitoring and Evaluation in and around Schools

Project Description

This course is intended to understand the impacts of traffic on air pollution in and around schools. The course focuses specifically on monitoring and evaluating the criteria air pollutants, mostly PM2.5 or PM5.0 and compare with nearby ambient air quality to understand the pollution level caused by the traffic in schools' drop off and pickup areas.

Hand-held equipment will be used to monitor the air quality on-site. Field trip is necessary for data collection. Students will work with a graduate student, review the current state of the literature on this topic and perform a series of experimental tests under the guidance of faculty members and/or the graduate student. Students will also write a technical report summarizing the findings and prepare and present a poster in KSU Student Symposium and/or ASEE/ASCE/TRB conference for dissemination of knowledge.

Research Requirements

Required GPA to qualify for CE 4400. However, students can work on the project without course credit. Junior or senior with GPA of 3.5 (lower GPA can be accepted with waiver) will qualify for CE 4400.
