National Conference on Undergraduate Research Student Funding

NCUR2016_yellowshirtsThe National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) is the largest conference on undergraduate research in the country. Each year, approximately 4,000 undergraduates from all over the country present their scholarship as posters, oral presentations, performances, and works of art. It is a great opportunity for students to present their research and network with other undergraduate researchers. In addition, there are graduate school and career fairs at the conference. This year, NCUR will be held at the University of Memphis April 6-8, 2017.

If you are an undergraduate working on research, we strongly encourage you to submit an abstract. KSU will pay all expenses for at least one undergraduate per accepted project (possibly more depending on the availability of funds).

Instructions to receive your funding:

  1. Submit an abstract at http://www.cur.org/ncur_2017/. The deadline is December 2, 2016.
  2. In the NCUR form at the above link, be sure to put Dr. Amy Buddie (abuddie@kennesaw.edu) as the KSU director of undergraduate research; she will then receive a copy of the decision email. If you forget this step, be sure to forward your acceptance email to abuddie@kennesaw.edu (if you do not do this, KSU will have no way of knowing that you've been accepted to the conference, and you won't receive funding).
  3. You will receive an email from Dr. Buddie with further instructions about the funding. Do NOT register yourself for the conference. Do NOT book a hotel room on your own. Do NOT arrange for your own transportation to Memphis. All of this will be taken care of through KSU, and if you make your own travel arrangements, you will be required to pay for them yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  1. I would like to go on this trip just to see what an academic conference is like; can I be a part of this trip even if I'm not presenting?
Unfortunately, we do not have enough funds to sponsor students who have not been accepted to present at the conference.
  2. What happens if my NCUR application is late?
NCUR does not accept late applications; you will be ineligible for the funds.
  3. I've received my notification of acceptance from NCUR – should I make my own plans (e.g., transportation, hotel)?
No. KSU will be making these travel arrangements.
  4. Can my faculty mentor get funding to come on the trip as well?
Unfortunately, we do not have enough funds to cover both students and faculty mentors. A limited number of faculty members will be accompanying students on the trip.
  5. I've submitted a poster – can I get that printed for free?
Yes – we have poster printing capabilities, and all students presenting posters will have access to this poster printer.
  6. I've never presented my work at a conference – what is that experience like?
Your faculty mentor can talk to you about academic conferences, and we will also hold informational sessions prior to the trip. Don't worry; you're going to have a great time, and you will be well prepared for this exciting opportunity.
